Phoenix and the Community: We believe everyone should enjoy art
Street Art Project
Phoenix Brighton is developing a series of street art projects, the first of which is currently underway and has been supported by the Brighton & Hove City Council Restorative Communities Fund. The current project will culminate in an artwork being painted directly on to the back of the Phoenix Brighton building, an area which attracts anti-social behaviour.
A group of young people who live on the Phoenix Estate have been working alongside experienced youth worker and street artist Tom Hines. The young people have attended a series of workshops at Phoenix Brighton to design an artwork that expresses a collective identity and uses imagery that they feel represents them. Together with Tom they have come up with the Phoenix bird motif as a powerful symbol of who they are.
They have learnt new skills around designing and planning public artworks and will continue to work with Tom to paint the piece itself. The artwork will give the young people ownership over the area and send out a proud and positive message to passers-by about the people who live here. Following on from this project Phoenix Brighton plans to expand this project across further local sites in consultation with local residents.
